Default Recommendation for New Struts-Want Smooth Ride

I have 2008 Turbo Touring and I need to replace the struts. I'm going to pay a mechanic to install them, but I want to buy the struts online. The originals have over 150,000 miles on them, and they are tired, so I do want to replace the entire assembly, springs and all (rear shocks were replaced 4-5 years ago).

But the wifey has never been happy with the ride, as she says it drives like a go-cart and she wants a smoother ride.

I see there's Gabrial, Monroe, and a brand called KYB? Whatever the cost, I just want to be sure the wifey gets the smoothest ride possible.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

I'm surprised you got 150k miles out of the original ones

The Monroe Quick Struts do very well for a daily driver and they're fairly inexpensive. You really could install them yourself, it only takes about 15 minutes per side and you will need an alignment after replacing. Since you're replacing the struts you might also want to replace the shocks in the rear at the same time to smooth out the ride on all 4 corners.

I second the monroe quick struts. I replaced mine a few years ago and the PT has ridden like a dream ever since.

Most aftermarket shocks and struts will not give a softer ride any model Monroe or KYB over a simple OEM stock replacement aftermarket or dealer. . I have used both and they will improve the handling sacrificing the smoothness.
The ride quality can be improved by removing the rear sway bar if equip with one and also changing the rear springs with an earlier year PT Cruiser with lots of miles and around 2004 or older. You can get these very very cheap just measure them to make sure they are both the same static height.

TIRES... can have a tremendous effect on ride quality. Shop for tires that have a high ride quality rating and reviews that users say they do feel a improved ride softness.
I currently have Noble Sport NS-20 on our PT and they are not only very affordable but having used 3 different tires makes used on our PT over the years these are by far the smoothest riding. We have used them in rain ,snow and dry weather for the last several months. In snow they will not do well if it is slush or new fallen flakes, but rain they hold very confidently. For aggressive driving on dry roads they will wash out if you push the PT to hard in turns.

BTW... it seems the number one complaint in 2001 from owners returning a questionnaire from Chrysler's PT Cruisers customers was ride quality. It may have influenced one of the reasons that the factory installed rear sway bar was removed and became a optional part.

Thanks for all of your replies. I went with the Monroe Quick Struts and had a national chain install them for $140 each (I know it can be a DYI install, but I just didn't have the time).

But right before I had the struts changed and new tires installed (Yokohamas at $140 each), I started hearing a buzzing sound when driving, and a slight (slight) vibration was felt thru the gas pedal.

I though the old tires had become worn due to the struts and that perhaps the struts were causing the noise, but the mechanic said it could need new wheel bearing & hubs, or it could be the transaxle.

I guess I'll have the bearings & hubs replaced and see if the sound goes away (hopefully that's all it is).

Thanks again for all of your replies!

Frank

The Monroe struts suck. I've been using them for a year. Car is lowered, they creak and make weird noises all the time.
