Default Should I Be Worried?

I have damage/rust on my polished alloy rims of my 2008 PT. Should I be worried about this? Some of the rust on the back passenger rim seems to have spread to the body and it looks cracked! Here's the pictures of the wheels.

Okay, that looks like salt corrosion. You might be able to help it with polish but it will never be perfect again at this point. If me, I'd start with a polishing compound made for alloy wheels and see how well it does. Once shined back up, I'd use two or more coats of synthetic wax to help protect them. Others may have some additional good ideas as well.

Think I'd unmount wheel from car, sand corrosion smooth, tape off tire and spray with a chrome silver paint or some other complimentary color on all 4 wheels.

These wheels have a clear coat. Waxing will really build your arm muscle but do nothing for the problem.

It is time to shop for other wheels or locate a sand blasting company, powder coater or just a good custom body shop in your area and have them stripped and blasted and do your own custom pant and or polish.
Busted_PT and VsandFords like this.

Like above, you Have a clear powder coat on them. Salt has penetrated. Now this didn't spread to the body. It to is affected by the salt. You might want back the clear in the areas affected and polish the metal to the same finish as the rest if the wheel. Then spray some clear on it to make it look closer to the rest of the wheel. At least from 10 feet or so.

Using a shop to do this would likely cost more that the wheels are worth. If I couldn't polished out the corrosion myself, refinish them myself as Carnut suggested and/or just live with them best I could on an aging PT, I'd look for another set of rims. But hey, it never hurts to get some quotes.

Um...you might check around your area for prices on stripping a wheel and or media blasting them. Many services of this type charge *25 per wheel for basic stripping. So 100 for the set and then 2 cans per wheel average rattle can paint and wheel clear coat about 15 bucks a wheel. So for about 160 you get a nice set of rims....

Those rims are not bad looking.....

*The stripping cost is what I charged to strip most wheels of this type to prep before powder coating. I would first apply a coat of aircraft stripper or Jasco Paint remover on the wheel let them sit for about 20-30 minutes. Rinse off with water and then a light media blasting which took about 5 minutes a wheel.

Then off to get powder coated. Depending on the color or colors chosen a set of wheel like the the ones in this thread would run about 400 clams.
