Default Clunking in right front area

I've been searching for this for a while and finally discovered there is significant play between the right tie rod and to whatever it connects to when it disappears into the rubber bellows on the steering gear.

This definitely needs to be repaired as the play is considerable. Is this a servicable item for a home mechanic? Must the steering gear be removed to enable replacement or repair of the problem in question? I have the downloaded pdf service manual and a quick glance through it hasen't revealed much so far - perhaps it will as I progress farther into it.

If there are those who could give some guidance it would be appreciated. This is my only transportation.

Thanks.

Thank you for your response. I have replaced the right control arm. The rear bushing was in bad shap as you suggest. However it did not aleviate the problem. Further inspection revealed the slop I mentioned in the steering. That is what this post was about.

hi, you didn't even mention that in your original post, so that would have helped your cause.

there's something called an inner tie rod on the steering rack. they usually dont go bad as often as outer tie rods but it's not un heard of. that's a more likely cause here. also the factory service manual does not have procedures for servicing the steering gear inner rods. however it's straight forwards.

perhaps you just need this one part, or an entire rack, i have not done this particular job so i don't know for sure. but it's worth trying as the inner tie rods are under $20 on rockauto.
