Question Engine compartment wash?

I've seen the engine compartment on some cars and it looks pristine. I'm curious how one washes and engine and engine compartment so that it looks like new.

Use local, self serve, car wash. You'll want a strong, dedicated, heavy spray. Engine
should be warm. Cover areas susectible to water. Use undiluted Awesome cleaner, a
dedicated engine cleaner from an auto store or the engine cleaner spray selection at
the car wash. Spray every surface to be cleaned. Don't forget those hard to reach
areas underneath. Oil pan and undercarriage. Do the rest of the underside later. Use
a long handled brush to scrub all those nasty areas. Spray using standard car wash
selection to remove any harsh first stage cleaner. Rinse and repeat till satisfactory.
Remove covering on susectible areas. Start engine to dry.
SOOO BIG's engine is clean enough to cook up grilled cheese sammiches and frozen
entrys for on the road snacks. 10 miles per side for sammich, 50/60 miles for an entry.

I do it slightly differently.
Warm up engine...
Spray down dirty areas with Simple Green or similar...let set 5-10 minutes...

**Then start engine before you rise off with less than powerful spray.
Let engine run a while to dry.

There is a large selection of spray or wipe-on engine compartment "dressings" that are not harmful to electronics or hoses.
