Default engine

I believe I read somewhere that the PT 2.4 engine is non-interference.
Can anyone confirm that? I hate to think about the timing belt breaking if it's not.

Correct. MX-5 posted that from the manual. The pistons cannot strike the valves if the timing belt breaks.

Watch out!

Although the pistons will not hit the valves, the valves CAN hit each other if the cams turn out of sync.
