Default mpg

Hi guys,I have a 2003 touring edition and I love everything about it except for the MPG. It seems no matter how I drive it I dont get much better than 15-16 mpg. I took it to dealership and they told me if anything was wrong the computer would have shown it and to try to change where I buy my gas. Personally I think that was a b/s excuse. I bought it used with 22,000 miles. I really want to dress it up but it costs me way too much in gas right now. I had an old suzuki sidekick which was 11 years old and it got about 27 mpg and it had a 4 cyclinder engine also. Any pointers would be appreciated because I will blow my stack when I bring it back to dealership and they give me the same excuse.I know from filling from empty that I have 15 gallon tank.

Your gas mileage does seem a little low for a non-turbo. I average just under 16 mpg with most of my driving in stop and go city driving on my '03 GT turbo. I would first try disconnecting the battery for about 10 minutes to reset the PCM. Then drive with a light right foot. You should be getting several mpg more than you are but unless you do a fair amount of highway driving, don't expect 27 mpg.

Try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. That should reset the computer back to baseline and see if that helps your gas mileage. If it doesn't, then the dealer (maybe take it to another dealer) should do a diagnostic and see if anything turns up or at least change the spark plugs and wires for you. Lot of people have been showing pictures of fouled plugs and bad SP wires lately. There even was a TSB about it posted a day or 2 ago.

TSB = Technical Service Bulletin. Read this thread and halfway down the page is an example of a TSB:

They're talking about the drop-in filter to replace the stock filter, not an intake. The filter is around $35, but lasts forever, the intake is $200+.
Also consider synthetic oil - it helps a little, too. Check the tire pressure (posted inside driver's door) and keep tires pumped up - you'd be surprised how much rolling resistance a drop in PSI causes.
