Default sudden engine fire in 2002 pt cruiser

I have a 2002 pt touring edition with auto, sun roof, abs, traction etc (I don't know if it affects anything). It has about 20k and was just inspected (state emission and safety). After an about 10 mile ride it suddenly started smoking from under the hood and pretty high flames came out. With the help of my neighbours (and their fire extinguishers) the fire was put out, but all the hoses and cables between the engine and the wall were burnt. The car has not been picked up by the insurance company. I took some pictures. Any other stories and ideas?

I believe that the 2001 and 2002 models have a TSB to fix the fuel line rubbing against the AC line (it may be a recall item, can't remember). This might have caused your fire.

There was a recall for 2001-2002 PT's because of the gas line rubbing through problem. Believe the Recall number is B16 or B23. The Recall began on 08/12/2002. Can read more here:
http://ptenthusiasts.org/PTForums/sh...l+line+problem
http://ptenthusiasts.org/PTForums/sh...ad.php?t=16720
On 2001's, the fuel line is replaced and a clip is added. For early 2002's, just the fuel line is replaced. Can call DaimlerChrysler at 1-800-853-1403 and see if DC will cover any/all the damages and the parts and labor.

[:0]Wow sorry to hear about the fire. Thanks for the warning. That was a good link to look at. I read people are using a wire tie to hold it away. Mine is 2002 don't know if it was replaced but I don't seen any clip or anything to hold it away in time looks like it could migrate over their. I think a tie for now, but Dealer should have a better solution. dagna you should be coverer by DC. Let us know how it works out.

Believe it was on 01s and only very early 02s. I have an 02, and it wasn't recalled. Don't recall build date, but I purchased Oct 2001.

You have fire/theft on car insurance?

The recall on the gas tank seal included the fuel line problem. So it was a two recalls rolled into 1 inclusive recall and it should have been done/covered when you went in for recall #B23.

Does anyone know if DC has a web link to tell if your car is part of the recall? Can I find out with out calling DC or going to a dealership, what are the options?
