07 - rear dorrs wont open from inside - child locks are off

We bought a used 07 PT that has been well used. Neither rear door will open from the inside, both will open from the outside. I can flip the child lock switch to off and see the inside latching mechanisms working, when the switch is on the mechanisms dont move at all. So to me this rules out the child locks but im open to sugestions. Also when opening from the outside the push buttons go all the way in and then you have to give it an extra hard push with your thumb just to get the door to open. Our kids dont have the strength in their thumb to open the doors from the outside.
Is this a known issue with the PT or is there something im missing? We dont have the owners manual that should have been in the glove box.

Don't think the owners manual will help. Apparently you have some thing inside the door that keeping it locked. Even though you think the child-proof locks are working, I'd guess they really aren't releasing. I'm not sure how, but take the inner door panel off and see what's happening.

Re: 07 - rear dorrs wont open from inside - child locks are off

I checked things over again. With the door open, i pulled on the inside door handle and the mechanism just behind the child lock switch will lift up but just doesnt go up high enough to unlatch. I can reach in with a screw driver and lift it up about 1/4" higher and it will unlatch. When pushing on the outside handle button the mechanism lifts up high enough for it to unlatch. With the child lock flipped on the mechanisms dont move at all when you pull the inside handle. It just feels like the linkages inside the doors are sprung. Maybe somebodys kid pulled on the handles too hard when they were locked.

So what the heck do i do now? Replace the doors entirely?

As I said, take the interior panel off, to see what exactly you need to do to fix it. Maybe bending of a linkage or bar, that's probably all it needs. If you can't, any glass replacement place will help you take the panel off and see what's happening.

There is a plastic piece that connects from the handle to the bar that goes across the door panel. Something may be wrong with that or it might have popped off (since it is just clipped in)

There are a few screws holding the door panel on and then some clips. You can gently pry it off with your hands like I did, or you can get a set of plastic interior panel removers. Either way, that will take off your panel and you will be able to further investigate the root of the problem.. Should take about 10 min to remove it.

Also, when you do get the panel loose, remember that the handle still is (or should) be connected to that bar via the clip, so be careful with it.

Popped off the door panels. I can see the rod and linkages working, everything looks fine. Just doesnt seem to have enough pull to open. Alot of the parts are made of plastic, i think its just stretched out and worn out.
Im not sure i could replace any of the internal components if i could buy them anyway. You cant really get your hand into the door, looks like they put it all together before they slapped the two door halves together.
Dont know where to go with it from here.

I'd really stop in to a shop that does replacement of the glass. they have all kinds of tools and parts and use to working in that confined space. Keep the panel off so it makes it easier for them to look at it.

Well i managed to get one door to work. I sprayed the heck out of the machanisms with carb cleaner and then gave it some WD-40. It works like a champ, but the other side still wont go. Whats going on is everything has gotten gummed up with road dust and it just takes too much force to pull hard enough on the rod to get it to open. I can pull the rod by hand that is attached to the inside door handle and get it to work, but the inside handle has plastic linkages that attach it to the rod. The linkages just flex and stretch to much.
Id take it to somebody to work on but i really dont know how you could replace the lock mechanisms. Looks to me like its a one shot deal, once the doors are affixed together forget it.
