Default To keep or not to keep. Need advise.

Car wrecked but just barely yesterday. Tailgate needs to be replaced (glass intact) and damage on drivers tail light and body. Tailgate support structure appears intact and no frame damage. Bumper damaged but not destroyed. A truck rolled into it on down ramp in garage while parked.

Insurance want to give me $5,287 to total the car or $3,651 to keep the car and fix myself. (-$1,651 to keep car). I have done all the repairs myself except trany over the years.

I may be to close the situation to make a logical decision on whether to keep or take the money and run. Need your help.

One key thing I don't know is how long can I expect the engine to last millage wise?

2003 Inferno Red Touring PT Cruiser - 128,000 - Well maintained
New trany 8 months old (warrantied)
front end parts & motor mounts refreshed 100% this year
Inside immaculate.
headlights replaced this year
Fog lights don't work
Cruiser control not trusted anymore
bought in 2005 for $11,500 with 39,000 k
CAI installed
Tires 80%
No other mechanical problems which have not been fixed/replaced.
No other wrecks worthy of mentioning.
Just paid off this year.

Will post Pics later as it just happened yesterday but the damage really not that bad and repairable or just fixable cheap to give to my college daughter.

If they give you $5,287 for an 03 N/A with 128k miles, take the money and run!!! and if you still have the car in your house, take some of the new parts out and sell them...and make more $$$$

Sounds like you are in a win/win situation.
$5287 should get you another nice PT or other car, and doesn't sound like repairing yours should run $3651.
I'd probably keep and fix - you know what you have - new tranny, solid, maintained engine - buying another used car is a crap-shoot.
Go to the thread on "how many miles on your PT" - there aren't engine failures on PTs - unless someone didn't change timing belt, or didn't put synthetic oil in a turbo.

I would let them total it out.It would be pretty easy to find another one with lower miles for $5200.

Bump.... Still need more input keep it coming. PT Cruises don't seem to get much respect price wise after looking at those being sold by owners in the Houston market. Comments on current resale market also welcomed.

New Info. Should be getting more the 5,200 as the insurance is considering the new trany and other improvements done this year....

Bring it to a body shop and get estimate.

I just had wifes 06 repaired, someone tagged it in parking garage.

New mopar bumper, base clear on the bumper cover and pass 1/4( flaked the paint near the tail lens but no real damage, new marker light for bumper, probably 8 hrs labor between the paint and repair, about 1500

So you go to yard get a hatch, maybe 150$ and and swap the hatch yourself and have shop replace the bumper and paint. I would bet you could get out of it for less than 3200$

Also it sound like you know what you have. So I would fix unless body shop sees something your not.
