Default Automatic Door Locks

Came out of the grocery store this morning and I cannot get my doors to operate with the fob. All the door locks work with the inside switches. I have changed the batteries in the fob and just for kicks I also changed the fuse for the door locks. They still work using the inside switch, but not with the fob. Can these just break? I have a 2005 PT.

You could have a problem with the RKEM (Remote Keyless Entry Module) located in the dash. First check the Number #10 fuse in the PDC (Power Distribution center) in the engine compartment which is for the RKEM.

That fuse appears to be fine. So, probably need to replace the RKEM?

I wouldn't jump right on the replacement. Seems I read someplace that one of the solenoids could be a problem.

Found it...

I misread a previous post about the #10 fuse, thinking it meant one in the fuse box and not the ones in the engine compartment. How do you check these? Do they just pull out like a regular fuse? Is there any risk of shock if you do it wrong?

I am trying to understand this problem. I had no ability to use my fob even after changing the battery. HOWEVER, a couple of days later all things worked, on a hit or miss basis, for three days. After that there was no ability to lock/unlock the doors using the fob.

Now I have use the key to get in, but the buttons on both front doors still lock/unlock every inside door. However, it will not unlock the rear hatch.

What also puzzles me is that the rear "touch" lock release does not work. However, when I use the key to unlock the hatch all the other doors unlock themselves also.

A fuse is a fuse. Pull it out and look carefully at it, better yet, if you have an electrical tester, make sure it's got continuity from one end to the other.

If it all works for 3 days then stops working, you have an intermittent electrical problem or bad ground somewhere. They are the hardest to pin-point.

You might want to stop at an Auto Parts Store and check your Fob. Most of them have a tester to see if they're transmitting.

Unplug the negative cable on the battery for a few minutes, and see if it resets things.

I like to try the simplest things first, and go from there.

No, but the vehicle has two major issues (one that need immediate attention) and the door locks have been knocked down the list of repairs. I just lost my heater core this weekend ($1000), so no defroster/heat and I am getting the timing belt/water pump replaced (1200). I am trying to decide whether to do these or just get a replacement vehicle. We are getting to colder weather finally here in MD and I need to get this decided quickly.

I did not see the "disconnect the negative ground cable" response. I will try that to see if anything help. My fob also broke two weeks ago, so I will purchase a new one and see what happens with that.'

I will post updates in a week or so!
