Question Buying a 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Touring - What to look for?

Hello, I am buying a 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Touring with 98,000 miles on it from an acquaintance. It has the 2.4L 150 hp I4 with a 4-speed automatic tranny. The previous owner was very good at maintaining the vehicle (all the service records) and the car is very clean both inside and out.

My question is, is there any particular issues that i should look for that are unique to the PT Cruiser line, especially the 2006, other than the normal mechanical issues that one looks at when buying a pre-owned vehicle? Thanks

I own an 06. Check for front end trouble. rocker arms and tie rods. The front end seems to always take a beating on these cars.

The one thing I always tell people to do when looking for a used PT is to have it idle for about 15 minutes with the A/C turned on HIGH. Watch the temp gauge to make sure it doesn't go above half way and it should continue to give cold air inside the cabin. IF the gauge starts to climb towards the red, the car has problems. It might be as simple as a new thermostat or as bad as a head gasket.

...and like every other used car, turn on everything (lights, radio, have someone look at the brake lights when the pedal is down, front and back windshield wipers etc. Take it for a test drive, fast/slow and hit the brakes hard to see if it stops in a straight line.

As others have said - suspension and timing belt.
Look over those service records - look for timing belt replacement and a flush of the transmission.
Follow Crewzin's advice and let it idle w/A/C on.
Good luck.

If they have maintenance records look for in 98K

1) a couple of services on the transmission fluid and filters
2) 3-4 changes of plugs and 1-2 sets of wires
3) 2-3 Changes of the coolant
4) replacement of LCA or LCA Bushings
5) Tires and alignements
6) Timing Belt and water pump, tensioners etc
7) multiple oil changes
8) Upper and lower radiator hoses and heater hoses
9) 1-2 Brake jobs including new rotors and pads
10) Replacement of PCV a couple of times.

If unsure have a mechanic check it out and as noted on the cooling, the fan operation.

Also do the key dance:

To do the key dance, turn everything in the car off, no stereo, wipers, lights, etc., just to keep the system load down. Turn your key to the accessory position, that is two clicks prior to the start. So, you have Off, Acc, On, and Start (which is the spring-loaded position). Turn to Acc, wait a few seconds, then On, Acc, On, Acc, and On... leave it in the On position (NOT THE MOTOR START POSITION!), you should see a series of dashes ------ at your Odometer, while the PT runs the internal diagnostics testing. Takes maybe 10 to 15 seconds or so and then it will return the DTC's (diagnostic trouble codes).

Than download the Diagnostic Trouble Codes.pdf from http://www.ptcruiserlinks.com/forum/...s-library.html

THIS^^^^^
If the timing belt, water pump and tensioners have not been changed, offer $800-1,000 less.
