Default Speedometer quit

2004 Non-turbo, standard transmission.
No speedometer. Just quit. No cruise control, odometer and the idle motor is funky. Pressing the odometer button while flicking the key test showed the gauges work. Replacing the VSS didn't fix it. Where do I look next?

First, clear any trouble codes then drive the car and see which ones reappear. If no joy, there are two speed sensors. Try the other one. You can also try reseating the gauge cluster. The contacts on the back can be sort of wonky sometimes.

Thanks. Code P0501. This is a stick shift.
PS Combed the shop manual and couldn't find a 2nd speed sensor.

If the tach works, then you know the PCI communication lead from the PCM is good. Unplug the lead from the speed sensor (likely an orange wire) and unplug the PCM plug C1 (for a manual tranny). Then test continuity and resistance.

If all the wiring and sensors is good, the pinion factor might be missing from the PCM.

At least the manual transmission is unaffected. Wonder what a scanner with the pinion setting feature costs?

Wasn't the vehicle speed sensor. Spun the sensor up with a drill and the speedo worked fine. Can spin the little gear that drives the VSS, inside the transmission, with my finger. After looking at shop manual drawings I don't understand how that's even possible. That ring gear is mounted on the differential with spanner like notches. Unless it moved out off the end of the diff beyond the notches Well, not going to remove and split the transmission just to fix the speedometer but did order a endoscope so I can see inside the VSS hole hopefully seeing if the ring gear is in place. Maybe I can pry it back into place with a screwdriver or something.

Wait...
Before you do all that? If the Speedo is not working...
Get any OBDII sensor and get ANY app and see if you see the speed picked up.
If that works? Then its the gauge cluster.

You might have a Cracked SOlder Joint. Very comon in the Minivans.

Take a Look at your Board first and see if you see any Pads lift up or somthing like that.

I don't think or recall there is a Speedo Cable for the Manual Transmision. I thought it was all just sensors.

Wish I could just rewire everything and use a Minivans ROCK SOLID electrical system in this car.

No cable, it's a rotary sensor. Probably so an old transmission design can work with a new speedometer design. Spinning gear on one end, wires on the other.

Making me eat my words. I'm always complaining about "high tech" when it's the low tech that failed.

Picked the brains in a transmission shop about the loose ring gear. Very common. The nylon gets old and brittle and the tabs break off. The only fix is removing the transmission, splitting the transmission case and replace the plastic gear. Or I could just replace the transmission. For a speedometer?!

Update: Found and ordered a $12 GPS speedo from China. Plug it in, stick it to the dash, done. It's not a $30,000 car.
