Cal wrote: It has been quite a while since I have driven a turbo car, but it all came back pretty quick with my new 5 speed. There is plenty of boost in 1st, you just have to know how to drive a turbo stick. If you want boost you have to slip the clutch more off the line. The torque converter slips the clutch for you on an auto, it just depends on the stall speed of the converter how much. Turbos are known to work very well with autos because the RPM's don't drop between shifs and the turbo stays spooled. You have to shift quicker and keep the rpms up to drive a turbo stick well. Just practice, you'll get it. I like the close ratios of the 5 speed but that is just me.
I've driven 3 different 5-speed turbos now and they were ALL the same. If You have to slip the clutch to get the 5-speed "going" I hope You have lots of cash for clutch replacements. (Especially now that "other people" know You do that, good luck getting a clutch replacement on warranty). That's the problem with the 5-speed, it's computer doesn't allow the turbo to engage in 1st gear at all no matter how much You slip the clutch. If You drive both the turbo automatic and the turbo 5-speed and You have any knowledge of engines at all You can REALLY tell that it's a totally different computer set up. Just watch your tach and "feel" when the turbo starts kicking in. The auto kicks in smooth and strong at about 2,300 RPM. The 5-speed doesn't kick in at all in 1st gear, no matter what the RPM's are, and there's NO torque until after 50 MPH. Sorry to say it but the 5-speed is a real dog, a disappointment, and if You were to race an auto all You'd see is his rear bumper. I was REALLY excited when they announced a 5-speed turbo was coming out, especially when it was SUPPOSED to be quicker than the auto. But when it finally arrived and I drove it and found out that the auto is DEFINITELY quicker I decided NOT to buy one. I'll wait until they get the bugs out, the torque in, and I'll wait until it's actually quicker than the auto.
Here's something to try: Get your 5-speed turbo going in 1st gear to about 2,500 RPM and then punch it. What do You get? Nothing! Try it on the auto-turbo and your tires are spinning like crazy, (JUST LIKE THE 5-SPEED NON-TURBO). Keep the 5-speed turbo floored until redline in 1st gear and what do You get? No torque, no wheel spin, and not much further away from where You started. Sorry to say, the 5-speed turbo is a REAL DOG! VERY slow off the line and VERY slow until about 50 MPH. It's a real shame that DC changed the computer set-up in the 5-speed turbo, they took away almost all the torque. Maybe it had so much torque that You couldn't stop the wheels from spinning? Well, sorry to say again, it definitely DOES NOT have that problem!
I know if You put a turbo auto and a turbo 5-speed on a drag strip the auto will NEVER be the one lagging behind, and it should be the other way around. And DC advertised the 5-speed to be quicker....false advertising?????????? YES!

flamedcruiser: it is no use trying to justify your purchase of an automatic. The 5 smokes and ill put it against your auto any day. There is no use for the turbo to kick in in 1st gear. Im not sure why you are so hung up on that. 1st gear is more than enough to get the car movin. Keep the rpms up and the 5 speed will hit peek hp (5000) in no time in 2nd 3rd and 4th faster and more frequently than the auto. sorry to say. Its also alot more fun than grandmas auto.
p.s no problem getting the trac light to flash in first gear here! cant imagine what your problem was. have fun and keep both hands at 10 and 2

hey pt:
I'm definitely not trying to push the autostick, I think automatics are for mini-vans, really old people, and top fuel drag cars ONLY. And I don't have an auto-stick, but my Grandma does. I just feel REALLY sorry for the people buying the 5-speed turbo who don't realize how much quicker the auto-stick is than the 5-speed. It should NEVER be that way! DC did some false advertising stating the 5-speed was quicker from 0 to 60, that's for sure! Just need to know that while You're "getting your 5-speed going", (with no turbo in 1st gear), my Grandma's auto-stick,(with an active turbo in 1st gear), is already 75 feet ahead of You........that's all.
Drive them both before You buy or order one, or You're in for a big disappointment with the 5-speed turbo. The 5-speed should be badged "turbo, except for 1st gear". And watch for my Grandma. She's the little old lady in the should be slower auto-stick that just blew your doors off! Say Bye, Bye Grandma! By the way, my hot rod Grandma takes on 5.0's, 5-speed turbo's, and other supposedly quick cars and not only blows their doors off but she stops and waves at them after she slows down so they can catch up. Better beef up the 5-speed turbo or my Grandma will make You feel REALLY foolish! (More foolish than paying for a 5-speed that's slower than an automatic)??????? Let me know after You run her.

When you test drove the stick, did you remember to take the parking brake off?

Turbos are known to work very well with autos because the RPM's don't drop between shifs and the turbo stays spooled

The chip in the gt-5 keeps the rpm's up.
Where did you get your info on the turbo not kicking in in first. most of the time I am not in first anyway. and for any of you auto or stck that are out to punch it for speed, "turn the trac off" all you are doing is breaking

There is plenty of turbo in 1st gear. For me, 1st gear happens so fast I am shifting almost immediately. If you are not used to driving a turbo I can see where you might think that. It is not like driving a NA car. If you want boost you just have to go to about 2500-2800 rpm and slip the clutch till speed matches rpm and go from there. I am no expert and I am not flaming anyone, but I have had several turbo cars and it is just different. You probably can't just get into a turbo and drive it well at a brisk pace. You have to anticipate more but the car mag reviews I have seen all put the stick quicker. Even if you have a better reaction time the stick will reel you in before the 1/4 comes up. Heck, it has been about 5 years since I had a turbo and it took me a while to get the hang of it again. I have had it for a couple of weeks now and I get LOTS of boost in 1st gear.
