Default AC and idle situation

I noticed yesterday while driving the 2005 PT GT with the AC on that when I would come to a stop light, the car felt like it was going to stall out. The RPMs were real low (around 700-ish) and the steering wheel was shaking like crazy. What gives? I never have this problem on my 2001 Touring.

Your radiator fan might not be working properly or your A/C might be low on freon. With the engine cold, start the engine, turn on the A/C and see if the radiator fan comes on automatically.

How is the idle without the A/C on?

Is your engine light on? If so what codes?

Has any work been done to it lately?

r134a could be OVER-filled as well. girl i know had a car shaking and the cause was a husband that had the car so severely overfilled with the DIY refrigerant cans that the low pressure side gauge on the machine indicated he was a retard.

I will do the cold engine test momentarily and report back.

Idle is fine without AC on.

No CEL at the moment.

Most recent work was a couple of weeks ago when the Cam & Crank position sensors were replaced. Also, the power steering pressure switch sensor.

I just acquired the car before Christmas, so I'm not sure how long the AC was causing this.

UPDATE: I did the cold engine test after work today and the radiator fan DID come on immediately when I turned the AC on.

When I got home, I hooked up my laptop and scan tool so I could give you accurate RPMs of what is happening.

Normal engine temp (coolant 195 degrees)
Idle avg with no AC - 750 rpm
Idle when AC is turned on - 820 rpm
Those numbers are with the car in Park or Neutral

When I put the car into Reverse or Drive, the RPM surges down to 720 rpm, but then goes back up to avg numbers from above.

It seems to me that the car is performing as normal. Could it be a failing motor mount that is causing the vibration and feeling like it is going to stall?

Thanks in advance guys!

The link below might help you determine if your motor mounts need replacing.

When the fan begins to fail it will run sometime.
Best to check it when the engine shakes with the AC on to see if it is running.

If the fan were failing, wouldn't I also be experiencing overheating issues? I have monitored the engine coolant temperature on several occasions and this is what I have seen.

While idling, the coolant temperature will climb up to around 207-208 degrees and then the radiator fan kicks on and the coolant temperature drops back down to around 195 degrees. Is that normal operation?

If the motor mounts look good I would suggest you check to see if you are low or high on freon. Post what you find out.

Does your A/C blow cold air?
