Question 2003 GT Cruiser won't start - Ignitiion issue

I started with an intermittent problem where my Cruiser would not crank, not even a tic, tic, tic, tic. Then it became permanent.

I have confirmed the starter is working by jumpering the 2 pins in the starter relay socket.

I have totally disassembled the ignition switch but did not find anything broken or out of the ordinary. Furthermore, I have validated that the yellow wire on the starter relay socket is getting power when I turn the key in the ignition to start.

I can also hear the headlamp relay kick in to turn the off on starting.

I have tested and validated that the starter relay is working by 1) testing it on a bench with an ohm meter and 12 volt source, and 2) by swapping it with other relays.

I concluded that the issue was the PCM. I was getting a lot of error codes that all ended in "or PCM may have failed". I just got a reprogrammed used PCM that appears to be fine. All my error messages have gone away after powering it up and trying to start it a few times except one that relates to my low speed fan that I was previously aware of but did not interfere with the engine starting.

But the car still will not turn over.

Anyone have any other thoughts that may be preventing the starter from getting power that I have not tried?

Hello. When you try to start the car, is there a small red light on or flashing in the middle of the gauge between the fuel and temp gauges? When you turn the key to on, that red light should illuminate and then go off after a couple of seconds. If it remains on or flashing, it means either:
  • your 'chip' key is damaged,
  • your key is incorrect/not programmed,
  • the pcm does not have the correct VIN programmed,
  • the SKIM module is damaged/not programmed,
  • the pcm is defective

Myckee knows PCM's. I'd suggest you send that one back and purchase one from him. At least he stands behind his work and does things right.

the fuse and relay panel. squeeze together the female sockets that hold onto the starter relay pins.
or you can try rocking/pushing down on the relay when someone is starting with the key. happened to me and took me a long time to troubleshoot as its not obvious.

I believe your car has a manual transmission. There is a safety switch on the clutch pedal. The clutch needs to be pressed to the floor before it will start. Its possible that switch has failed or become loose. You can test it by making a wire jumper to put in the plug socket to see if the car will start. Note, that when jumpered, it will allow the starter to engage in any gear and the car will move while in gear.

If it is an automatic try stepping on the brake pedal hard when starting. Also try putting in neutral. Sometimes the shifter cable gets out of alignment. Sometimes the PCM doesn't know what gear it is in. Also check for transmission codes. You might need an expensive transmission diagnotic tool to get all the transmission codes.. Your transmission range sensor migt be going bad.
