Anyone in NC, near Charlotte, know a good PT Cruiser mechanic who can replace my Cat? I'd like to find someone reasonable (if there is such a person!)

I have been getting all kinds of mixed signals on price and mechanics.

So, my request is to all the PT fanatics, please assist!

TigerMike

the shop i know and trust, that lets me use their tools, lift, and suppliers, will not install a cheap or aftermarket cat because they have had a lot that did not perform as well as oem causing cars to come right back in with angry owners. the shop owner used one on his escalade, and within a week it was back off the truck with a dealer one in its place. my aunt went there for a cat and they told her the cat for her honda CRV, from honda, was $1800 for just the part. she called me and asked my opinion. i told her it sounded insane to me so I called honda and her cat was infact $1800. this may be what you are encountering by you. i can't be much more help as i'm not near you, but i can tell you the aftermarket ones they are selling near chicago are crap that either wont work right, or go bad soon after installation.

if this sounds like one of the mixed signals you're getting, it may be the difference from a smart mechanic that cares, and one that either doesn't know better, or just wants to make the $$ from the labor while gambling on the cheaper part.

hopefully a member near you can steer you to a shop that is smart and honest

I had called the dealer on a Catalytic Converter for my 2008 PT Cruiser and it was $1362.00 plus tax.

Has it been verified that your Catalytic Converter is bad? Did the P0420 just start coming up on your PT Cruiser? On my PT Cruiser it started about 2 years ago and the code came up after 8 months, then 6 months, then 3 months and so fourth so it gives you plenty of warning that its plugging up or going out.
