It will open if you pull the knob, right?
Yes, it will open with the knob.

Thanks

Beside this thread, you should post in the new members section and tell us more about yourself and your PT Cruiser.

Here's some answers to your questions:

1. On the CD player, the internal mechanism in your stereo head is likely broken. However, the same type of stereo was used in 2006 thru 2010 PT's and many other Dodges and Chrysler cars and trucks. Salvage yards are full of them. They run about $35 where I live. So go to salvage yard, browse the choices and then pull yourself a nice one. There's also websites that describe the various models so you can identify the betters ones from the lower end models. Just be sure to pick one with the "half moon" sides on it like yours and not a very similar one with straight sides.

Of course, there's aftermarket stereo units too. You can installed a single DIN unit with an inexpensive adapter kit. However, if you want a full screen stereo, you will need to buy an aftermarket double DIN bezel. And those run around $100.

2. On the door lock, the locking mechanism in the door is likely faulty and/or the electric solenoid is not functioning correctly. If you are "handy", you may be able to remove the door panel and troubleshoot it. A simple adjustment and or replacement of a small piece of linkage might fix the problem. Or you may need something more extensive. If me, I would inspect it first. If I could not adjust it, I would got to a salvage yard, pull the entire locking mechanism out of a salvage PT and then install it.

3. You can buy a replacement key online. However, it will have to be programed to the car which is an expensive proposition. Some retail places, including some Walmart stores, have the ability to "clone" these keys. That means if you buy one from them, they can copy the programing code from your existing key to the new key. Your PT will not know the difference. A second option is to have a locksmith program a second key for you. The advantage of this is that the new key will work but it will have its own code. This will give you two unique keys. And with two unique keys, you can then program additional keys yourself following procedures readily available online. The Walmart key cloning will likely be cheaper but not by much. Expect to spend somewhere around $100 or more depending on where you live.

Again, welcome to the forum. You should stick around and let us know how the repairs go. And you should join in on all the fun around here. PT Cruiser fever is contagious.
Thanks for all that information. I just happen to be going to the junk yard today to get a donut spare for the car. I'll look for the proper cd unit.

And I'll go to the locksmith for the extra key.

Thanks

I went to the junk yard and got the vehicle a spare and enquired about the cd unit. They had one from an 06 but he didn't want to let me see it before I bought it. They wanted $65 and he told me it was clean. Well, I wanted to see it and he wanted me to take his word for how nice it was, so I passed. What is nice and clean to some is not necessarily nice and clean to others. I'll keep looking. Hopefully tomorrow I will look into the door lock.

I took the left rear door panel off and removed the actuator. Checked it with jumper wires. It will lock but will not unlock. The plastic clip that holds the metal arm was still good. I ordered one from ebay. $15 and free shipping.

Also had new tires put on today. Always feels nice to have new skids under you.

Next project will be removing the radio unit. I don't know if there is a way to take it apart to see if the rubber band is broke, but I'll look and see. I really don't want an aftermarket unit to replace it with, I would rather keep the stock look, I like it. I think the problem is going to be finding a pristine unit that isn't scratched.

I really don't know what a can bus is. Can someone explain that to me?

There are plenty of stock stereos available on Ebay, just search by the 3 letter code under the tuning knob. Many will have been tested and some sellers offer a warranty.

See LionPT's post for CAN Bus. It's basically the communications system for all the electronic systems in the car. There are different speeds.

As far as removing the radio, the main bezel just unsnaps BUT there are two screws in the centers of the vents that MUST be removed or: 1) you will not be able to get the bezel off, or 2) you will break the bezel.

Also important is that when removing the radio antenna cable, grasp the connector near the radio, and pull straight back. There is a latch that will release. If you try to just pull it out by the back of the connector or the wire itself, you could damage the cable.

Thank you for the info. I will research the radios online. And I will be careful with the antennae.

I have taken my cd/radio out and apart and I couldn't find anything that I could fix. Put it back in and still doesn't work. While it was out, I wrote down all the pertinent info of the unit and I'm trying to locate one with the correct part number, without face scratches AND inexpensive.

Can someone tell me what the two last letters in the part number mean?? I have found numerous units with the correct part number except for the last letter. Is it that important? Will a 6 disc changer work in my 2008?? How to tell which will be the correct one with the right canbus??

Thanks

The last 2 letters, if they change, indicate a part revision. If you have one that, for instance, is AB but you find one that is AC, the AC one would be the latest version.
