Unhappy Re: MPG Sucks!

I get only around 12 MPG on my 04' GT (2.4L Auto) for mostly around city. The car is a used one with 50K miles, oil changed, air filter cleaned. I read some posts and tried to drive like grandpa but things didn't change much. I don't know if it's the winter or the turbo thing. Any help would be appreciated!

My turbo gets better gas mileage than my wifes base model did. Its got a lot more to do with driving style than anything else. Tires and pressure make a difference, along with oil type and viscosity. Transmission also matters, as does how much you press on the gas...

Thank you Bob. If the low MPG seems reasonable, I guess I really need to improve my driving style...

I'd worry your O2 sensor is misreading or there's a massive exhaust leak telling it to puke in fuel -Our old 440 New Yorker didn't get that bad-

Always could be engine temp (NOT gauge circuit) sensor misreporting as well,
or IAT

Thank you UptownSport. The symptoms do seem like a exhaust leak or sensor misreading. I will take the car to the auto shop soon.

I just bought a 2006 gt with 32,000 miles I put about 700 miles on it in a week I drive pretty conservatively but every once in awhile put my foot in it. I have been getting 20 mpg in the city not to bad.

I have a 5-speed '08 convertible and drive conservatively. In mixed
suburban-highway (+/-60mph) I have been getting 27-29 mpg.
When I have driven faster or more aggressively I'll still get around 25 mpg, so overall I am satisfied.

My wife and I are both very light-footed, so it's not a driving issue. Aside from tire pressure and tuneup, is there any way to improve on this gas mileage?

We really like this car and only paid 9 K for it, but if I'd known about the mileage issue I wouldn't have bought it.
When I first bought mine, I was getting about 21mpg city. I have had it almost 2 years now, and lately I noticed that my MPG had dropped to about 13 *I ABOUT DIED* i did a tuneup *to no avail* oil change....nothing. then i changed my 02 sensor *even tho my computer was not throwing a code, when i took of my O2, it was completely busted *obviously malfunctioning* I am now back to getting 21 *not sure of HWY MPG yet*

I'm interested in how so many people claim to get over 20mpg in town. These cars aren't even rated that high by Chrysler. Chrysler's in-town rating is 19. Mine gets 16, probably because Billings has very severe traffic and a light on every corner.

Just curious if you guys are actually calculating it properly.
