Default 2003 Pt Cruiser will crank but won't start

I have a 2003 Pt Cruiser with 164,000 miles on it. I've been having am issue getting it started. I have a brand new battery and fuel fuses along with a brand new fuel pump and my timing belt is good. It idles rough and drives a little rough but it's not noticeable unless the car is idling. The check engine light is on and the code popped up was P0340 for the camshaft position sensor. I had that looked at and nothing was wrong. The car runs fine but it's trying to get it started is the problem. I ordered a new ECM and I'll be replacing mine this week. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is wrong with my car?

When did the rough idle start?

Replacing the ECM without further diagnostics seems a little overboard. You said the camshaft sensor is good. That's a lot less expensive to replace than the ECM. What about the electrical connection to the sensor, did you take it off and check it for connectivity to the sensor itself? Was the wiring harness from the sensor to the computer checked for cracks or ware on the harness itself?

You said the timing belt is good. Has it been changed since you hit 100,000 miles?

I would suggest you have a battery load test done. You need to find out if the new battery and the generator is working properly. The PT Cruisers are sensitive to voltage drops and will put out random diagnostic trouble codes if the modules start to lose communications due to low voltages.

I would suggest checking the camshaft and the crankshaft wires from the sensor to the PCM as CREWZIN posted. Sometimes the camshaft and crankshaft wires melt or start rubbing on the half shaft on some PT Cruisers and start an intermittent short that is hard to find when its not shorting all the time. With an ohm meter I would suggest wriggling the wires as some are inside a harness and hard to see.

How did you check the camshaft sensor?
Are you getting ground from the PCM?
Are you getting 8 volts?
With the ignition on and turning the crankshaft is the camshaft sensor outputting 5 Volts and .3 or .5 Volts.? Most members will just replace the camshaft sensor as this can be time consuming and requires tools.

Steve, 03 and up have the crank sensor on the front of the block. Under the starter. Can't rub the axle.

Actually, I believe they moved the crankshaft sensor to underneath the starter in 04.

Trying to find out where I got that information, it turns out that it might have been late 03 when the moved the sensor to under the starter. That might mean only on the 04 models or some of the 03 PT's.

I have not run into any 03 pt with the rear sensor. The are the first year of the PCM on the firewall. Only 01 & 02 engines will interchange with each other. 03 & up will interchange. All this because of the timing do to the crank sensor location.

Busted_PT, I was just trying to point out that sensor wires can go bad being caused by wire clips failing to hold it in place damaging the wire or being stretched by possibly working on another component next to the sensor. Thanks for making it clear for this member about the camshaft sensor wires not going near the half shafts on this PT Cruiser. I would still check the camshaft sensor wire going to the PCM.

[QUOTE=ptcruisersteve;580453Thanks for making it clear for this member about the camshaft sensor wires not going near the half shafts on this PT Cruiser.

Hang on a minute. I might have been off by a year on the location of the CRANKshaft sensor but the CAMshaft sensor wiring harness does indeed go around back of the engine and can fall loose to hang low enough to hit the half shaft. Happen to mine near midnight on I95 in South Carolina. When the wires hit the half shaft, my PT came to a sudden halt (actually I could drive it off to the side of the road) and call a tow truck to be worked on the next morning.

The connector itself on those would be the more than likely culprit with the harness that is.
