Default A/C Problem - doesn't appear to be low refrigereant

We have a 2008 NA Cruiser. Recently the AC compressor has started to cycle on and off fairly often, especially at idle. Purchased a refill kit. We hooked it with the AC running, and initially, it was in the green, then when the compressor kicks on, it goes up into the red. Any idea what might be going on? Thanks!

Is the cooling fan running when the a/c is turn on?

Hi - Just had a chance to check and the fan does come on when I turn the AC switch on at idle. Another interesting thing was as I was going down the road and turned the AC on, I heard a thunk, maybe one of the air control doors closing hard, I'm not sure.

I had a similar problem with SOOO BIG's A/C in 2016.
The clutch in the A/C compressor pulley was only working intermittently.
Bought a compressor on line for $158.00.
Part #CO 27001C from AC Components LLC.
Still works perfectly. Use it every day, Spring, Summer and Fall

Should the pressure shoot up into the red like that when the compressor kicks in?

I don't have the equipment to vacuum and redo the system.

not sure how accurate those ac recharge kits/gauges are... It is easy to overcharge the system with them.

Not sure either, but I haven't added any at this point. The compressor clutch is cycling on and off too quickly at idle though.
