When using simple mild cleaner if you wipe the hoses and the rag turns black from the rubber then that is the first sign of the rubber breaking down. I did say from the rubber and not dirt or grease. But that can also effect the breakdown of the rubber. Think about when some of you wipe your wiper blades when you wash your car in one sense it is the same thing. Well some of you do that?

IMO most all replacement intake pipes on most vehicles are for looks and the feeling of thinking you get more power then what actually happens. Most OEM intake system were thought out very well.

To be clear about hard pipes , in some application they do have advantages but more so for temperature control and a longer reliability and wear factor over OE parts. If the engine is so modified that the need for larger CFM intake pipe diameter is needed it is the easiest and most practical means.

I am aware of the claims of collapsing hoses and also the thought behind expanding hoses under pressure causing a lazy throttle.

To answer the respose about knowing when it went failed. It pretty much makes a noticeble whine/hissing sound when you take off from a stop. To patch it up until the new one came in, i went with a hard pipe install. (about 40 bucks for everything at the local auto store. The reason i chose to go back to the OEM was clearance and heat concerns. The hard pipe elbo at the turbo end runs pretty close to some coolant hoses and vacume hose for the turbo and man do those hard lines get HOT! All i did was run back in forth to work (15 miles one way at 45 MPH) and noticed some slight melting marks on the coolant hoses. The rubber on the OEM elbo acts as a good insulator for heat and keeps the pipe away from the hoses. Also, the straight part is double walled for less heat transfer. I'd be scared to death the something would catch on fire with plastic elbo and metal hard line kit.

For a replacement, the upper pipe between the turbo and air filter box is fairly easy to find at salvage yards. It's the lower pipes that seem to be hard to find undamaged. Salvage yards like to drag cars around with no wheels on them and/or pick them up with forklifts. Both can damage the lower pipes.

You can also find plenty of aftermarket pipes, especially the upper one. Just search eBay for "PT Cruiser turbo pipe". Many examples will come up. Some of these are universal but can be cut to fit. You can also get an aftermarket cold air intake that goes all the way to the turbo. I believe K&N and several other companies make ones like this. Here's a link to some on eBay.

You hit the nail on the head. Car has been "idling rough" ever since I bought it knew. Just checked all the passenger side mounts and they are ugly. Turns out the rough idle was in fact engine vibration. You would have thought the dealer would have found it on the 3 separate times u brought it in complaining about it feeling like it was gonna stall and vibrating at stop lights or at my 5 year lifetime warrenty inspection. Guess I will see how much I'm gonna have to fight to get them replaced under warrenty.

I have a 2008 turbo lite; all the hoses and tubes and wires still look shiny and new at 75,000 miles. Original motor mounts with their famous soft rubber had to be replaced at 45,000 miles, under the extended warranty...

YIKES!!! You guys are scaring me here. I just bought an '04 with the standard turbo. When I looked at it, I didn't REALLY LOOK at it. I know that it was suggested to check these things, but I am guilty of not quite knowing what to look for.

So, anyway, when I did my first oil change the other night, it just so happens that I DID look at the big fat tube that runs right by the oil filter. It's got some rusty spots, but it's quite solid. I did NOT check the rubber ends though.

I guess I should crawl under and check 'em since it's literally going to be a Grandma's car (my wife will be transporting her mother in it).

Looks like the one the OP bought on Amazon says Mopar in the title, but is coming from China with a non-Chrysler part number. So its not too surprising, I guess, that the knockoff part isn't using the same quality materials as the original. That is not always the case, but in this instance it appears to be true.

I wonder if you could use a silicone aftermarket elbow and clamp it on to the hard pipe. You could probably drill a hole in the hard part for the vacuum line too. That way you wouldn't have to buy another new crappy "oem" part.

i just ordered the part from the dealer and ... will report if the elbow is the softer rubber. but a 2 year exchange warranty from defects makes it worthwhile
