Question RUNNING SUPER ROUGH!!

I just got the car back from the bodyshop - the body guy said "this car is sure running rough".
It was running fine when I brought it in, but its been sitting around there ( waiting in line) for a couple of weeks now.

I noticed the battery was on the low side the weeks before I brought it in ( was planning to put the battery on conditioner when I got back - but it is three or four years old - at least! - so maybe time for a new one). Anyway voltage is normal charging voltage when the car is running.

BUT not sure whats up with this rough idle! No trouble codes registered, but I get a "pending" 0700 ( also saw that a month ago, when the car was running fine - I notice 7xx-codes seem to correspond with low battery voltage in the past, new battery making them disappear.

Never seen the super rough-running before though! Any hints??

Also, when looking up 700 code, found this odd TCM "reset" sequence ( never heard of it for PT before)

Fully press your foot on the gas pedal until it reaches the floor. Leave it pressed for 10-15 seconds until you hear a click. This will activate your kick-down switch. Wait for 2-5 minutes before interacting with your vehicle this includes opening doors, connecting a mobile device, or pressing anything!

Anyone ever done that reset?

Possibly bad gas? You did mention that it was sitting for a couple of weeks.
When was the last time you did a tune up (spark plugs and wires)?

I have never heard of the reset you mention.

Question Re: RUNNING SUPER ROUGH!!

Hmm, a little digging around indicates 'vacuum leak' could be a likely culprit... can anybody suggest the most common places to check for vacuum leaks? I haven't cracked the manual for this car in more than five years...

this is 2004 Touring ( "turbo lite")

Exclamation Re: RUNNING SUPER ROUGH!!

wow, it really SHAKES! I popped the hood open to poke around and see that it shakes NOTICEABLY. It looks like a blown hemi chugging away there. I cleared the P700 code and it hasnt come back. Battery voltage when its not running is 12.5V (seems low to me)

maybe battery is unrelated to this problem, but I had noticed it hard starting last month whihc I put down to the older battery getting weak.

This "shaking" has just come out of the blue, though - it was running great before I dropped it off at the bodyshop. Has an almost full tank of gas, but I would not say its "old" gas - though gas quality in this little town is probably questionable ( we only have one gas station and its not a 'name brand'...)

shaking is likely reflective of a uneven cylinder balance, likely caused by a simple misfire...
it'd start troubleshooting to determine if there's any ignition or fueling / compression problems
not an intermittent issue, it's consistent which makes finding the problem easier.
or bring it to a professional for a diagnostic

"Just sitting around for weeks"....gas was my first thought too.
Was the tank full when you dropped it off at the body shop?
Someone could have driven it a bit, and put some bad gas in after they felt guilty.

Otherwise, what PTGT said.
Check all your spark plug wire connections too.

Smile Re: RUNNING SUPER ROUGH!!

Thanks for the tips! It was pretty much a full tank a couple weeks ago. I guess that I should have recorded the mileage before I dropped it at the bodyshop... Just seems odd that if its a misfire that there are no misfire codes. Then again it would have to be REALLY bad gas... I have never had a hint of shake like that before! Off to the dealership in the morning tomorrow...

the engine computer is not modern enough to have a high enough resolution to determine misfires that aren't completely obvious, and sometimes other issues can cause rough running but may not be related to cylinder misfiring.

Post Re: RUNNING SUPER ROUGH!!

I think there was a little welding done around the rockers, yes... Also, I noticed that the (aftermarket) radio is offline ( won't power up). I have had that radio go 'dead' before, turns out it needs to be completely disconnected from battery power before it will reboot again.

Anyway I fiddled around a few minutes looking for any obvious loose wires or hoses and didnt find any - so off to the dealership it went. Unfortunately they said it will be a week or two before they can get around to working on it...
