Not sure of any "tricks" but if you can get under the car, grab the shafts and see if there's any play in either shaft. There shouldn't be hardly any. Check the boots on each end of each shaft too (#3, 6, 10 and 13 in the second picture). Look for a cut or tare that might let dirt get into the spider gears.

it might sound stupid, but is there a special way to check for play? i mean left/ right....frint to back...up and down....because i know its normal that theres a bit of play when you rotate it......

Is there a special way? Not that I know of. As I said, there shouldn't be hardly any play at all, just like on the wheel bearings. Grab hold and push up, down side to side, it should hardly move what-so-ever.

I've never tackled a job like that myself. so I really can't say what, if any, kind of specialized tools or expertise is needed.

Give us an idea of your mechanical ability and your tools. It really is not a hard job but you need the tools. Most specifially a 22mm socket (I think it's 22mm anyhow, I would need to check) and you need a torque wrench or torque multiplier that will get you up to 180#'s of torque to put the axle nut back on. You might need a 3 jaw puller if the axle splines are stuck at the steering knuckle. Other than that pretty basic hand tools, floor jack is useful along with jack stands etc
